Cooperation between Pharmaceutical Information Centre and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare helps to ensure equity of care
Pharmaceutical Information Centre and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare have launched unique cooperation to support data-driven management. They have created a service to transfer data between the two parties to provide information on the actual use of medicines for the Pharmaceutical Information Centre’s Real World Data services. The service can be used to review regional care practices and to ensure equity of care.
“The service provides a quick overview of the trends and changes in pharmacotherapy. Comparing this data with other data sources opens up many new opportunities. Users can view and compare regional care practices, for example. This helps to ensure equity of care,” says Mikko Polvi, Head of Analytics at Pharmaceutical Information Centre.
Pharmaceutical Information Centre’s Real World Data service is currently mainly used by pharmaceutical companies. There has been considerable interest in the service, and Real World Data is also considered to be vital in healthcare decision-making.
“Users of the service can review the introduction of new therapies and transitions between different therapies,” Polvi says.
Up-to-date and reliable information for decision-making
The service was created by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare and the Finnish Pharmaceutical Information Centre. It is an SaaS cloud service and available directly on web browsers. The data stream is available at all times, and it is regularly updated. Patients’ privacy is strictly safeguarded in the service. The data source provided by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) only includes statistical data describing a group of persons rather than individuals. The information has been compiled in such a way that individuals cannot be identified and their personal information is not available.
“For THL, the data transfer service is an entirely new analytic solution, which allows us to provide our customers a better service, using THL’s vast data sources in a timely and secure manner. The content of the service is always determined in cooperation with the customer, based on their needs,” says Antti Tuomi-Nikula, Team Leader of the Open Data Team at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare.
“It has been a pleasure working with THL to develop a solution that gives pharmaceutical companies and healthcare providers up-to-date and reliable information to support their decisions. We are pleased to be able to offer a service that will help to improve the safety, effectiveness and efficiency of healthcare,” says Minna Palhamo, CEO of Pharmaceutical Information Centre.
